What do UCLA students call themselves? ›

In a show of brotherly unity, Berkeley's student leaders offered the name Bruins to UCLA, and the Associated Student Council voted unanimously to adopt the name.

Martin conceived a way to represent the four letters of his school as well as the eight-clap, the Bruins' iconic cheer. It involved holding out four fingers on each hand with the thumbs tucked in. Four plus four equaled eight, not to mention a new hand signal known as Fours Up.

A Bruin is a brown bear. The Calif. state animal is a Grizzly Bear, so the mascot of UCLA was a Grizzly for a while. But Grizzlies was already taken by another college, so to be different UCLA went for Bruin: UCLA BRUINS - Traditions.

The University

Sometimes there's an advantage to complementing the campus logo with the full, formal name of the institution. Spelling out “University of California Los Angeles” reminds the reader that we're part of the highly regarded University of California system.

Once again, UCLA was in search of a moniker. After considering everything from Buccaneers to Gorillas, students remained in a quandary. At the time, UC Berkeley was using both Bears and Bruins. Berkeley's student leaders voted to give the Bruin name up and finally, UCLA had its mascot.

The University has used the Argentine cowboy as a nickname since 1936 when, inspired by Douglas Fairbanks's performance in the 1927 film The Gaucho, the female student population led a vote to change the mascot from the original Roadrunners.
