What is the main point in Luke 23? ›

Luke 23 records the civil trials of Jesus, as well as His crucifixion, death, and burial. The long-time plan of the Jewish religious leaders (Mark 3:6) is finally coming to fruition.

Jesus did nothing but good. He sacrificed himself to save us from all our sins. We are saved already. We should be grateful for this and in return, be faithful servants of the Lord by being a good role model and an inspiration to others.

Even though the Romans know He is innocent, "they know not what they do." Sermon Description

In Luke's account of Christ's journey to the cross, he includes the last public teaching of Jesus. In the midst of pain and suffering as he trudges along the road to face crucifixion, Jesus turns to the women who are following Him and admonishes them to weep for themselves, not for Him.

Jesus says “blessed are the barren..” ( Luke 23:29) to refer to the barren women who will be spared of the affliction that those with children will not be able to avoid in the rebellion against Rome.

The first thought is that the Romans are killing an innocent man now but will soon destroy a nation in rebellion. The second is that the Jewish leaders are killing an innocent man now, but they will soon be judged. Another is that God places His wrath on the innocent Jesus now but will judge the nation later.

A major theme in Luke's Gospel is God's care for people who were seen as insignificant in the society of his day. Specifically, this referred to women, children, the poor, and disreputable “sinners”. Luke thus gives a prominent place to women in his gospel (1:5-2:52; 7:36-50; 8:1-4; 10:38-42; 15:8-10).

Luke shows Jesus—fully God and fully human—moving among the people in compassion to free them from the myriad of things oppressing them. The disregarded, the outcast, the forgotten and the marginalized all got to see and experience the love of Christ—even if Jesus had to confront the Jewish leaders to do it.

The Priests bring and accuse Jesus to Pilate. Not permitted to execute Jesus themselves, the Sanhedrin brings Jesus to Pilate early in the morning for His Roman or Civil Trial.

Jesus is stripped of his garments. Clothing gives a man his social position; it gives him his place in society, it makes him someone. His public stripping means that Jesus is no longer anything at all, he is simply an outcast, despised by all alike.
